cobalt123 to find interesting and unusual photo opportunities in the Phoenix area. I spent part of today with her, and we visited The Soda Shop, a specialty store in Scottsdale, Arizona, which sells an unusual variety of soft drinks. One which quickly caught my attention and proved to be an endless source of amusement was the Leninade, seen here on the right. Printed on the bottle are several mock Communist slogans, such as one might have seen in the Soviet Union during its heyday (or what passed for a heyday in the Evil Empire). "Join the Party!" was one; others included "Get Hammered and Sickled;" "Comrades, drink -- it's this or the Gulag!" and "Try our Five-Year Plan: drink this every day for five years, then become a Hero of Socialist Flavor!"

Having The John Birch Society in mind, I juxtaposed the birch beer with the Commie beverage for this photo. I was a little surprised to discover a few hours later that, in someone's eyes at least, Leninade was adjudged worthy of its own Wikipedia article. I brought a bottle of the stuff home with me, but probably won't drink it for at least another day or so.

I wouldn't have done well in a Communist country, but some of my all-time favorite jokes originated behind the Iron Curtain, and I'll share a couple of them here. One has it that the Garden of Eden was located in the Soviet Union. How do we know this? Well, Adam and Eve had no clothes, no roof over their head, only one apple between the two of them, and they called the arrangement Paradise.

I don't know if the other joke originated with President John F. Kennedy, but he enjoyed telling it, and this one appeared in an anthology of his humor that was published in the mid-1960s. One day an apparently crazed man ran through the corridors of the Kremlin, shouting "Khrushchev is a fool! Khrushchev is a fool!" He was caught by the KGB, put on trial, and quickly sentenced to 23 years in prison: three for insulting the Party chairman -- and twenty for revealing a state secret.

I'll report back here when I try the beverage, although I suspect I will enjoy it far less than its packaging.

At the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG, aka "The Boneyard"), there is an area called "Planes of Fame" where they show examples of planes on the site with signs in front of them so that the tour groups can identify them. This F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Fighter is located about 3/4 of the way down the aisle.

Who says the military can't have a sense of humor?

The planes in the background are Navy PC-3 Orions.
